A special island

Hidden inside the Canary Islands archipelago, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, you can find a magical paradise: La Gomera. With only twenty thousand inhabitants, the island offers more than 370 square kilometres of charm, history and nature. Its virgin beaches, secret trails and beautiful, colourful landscapes make it a place where dreams come true.

Contenido

The island’s climate is a real gift of nature: warm and stable, under the influence of the trade winds which keep the island’s temperatures mild and not too hot and maintain the perfect level of humidity for the ancient forests in Garajonay National Park to thrive. An ideal climate for disconnecting, forgetting routine and finding new energy on heavenly beaches of volcanic sand.

Contenido

The island’s orography, history and scenery will make you feel special and unique. A place with its own identity, that of its people. The inhabitants of La Gomera are the result of a singular history, from the first native settlers to our current society, with a heritage of hundreds of years of memories and legends. Cristopher Columbus is a noteworthy figure on La Gomera, and the island played a key role in the discovery of America.

Contenido

The entire island has been a Biosphere Reserve since 2012, highlighting all of the local work on sustainable development. An acknowledgement of the balance achieved between developing the island and conserving its lush nature, achieving sustainable growth. Active tourism is promoted, but the La Gomera’s heritage is always placed first: its scenery, essence and the vitality of the sea and the land. Unique plants, marine mammals, endemic species and a broad spectrum of colours, La Gomera has it all.

Contenido

Supernatural landscapes

In the centre of the island, you’ll find its main treasure: Garajonay National Park, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986. A paradise where lush laurisilva from the Tertiary Era, palm groves and combinations of flora that are as diverse as they are unique all blend together. The park, like all of La Gomera, can be explored on foot via a network of trails that connects every inch of the island.

Contenido

Hiking trails that stretch from the mountains to the coast. La Gomera’s hallmark, like that of any good island, is its coast. Direct contact with the sea, which caresses the various unique and spectacular beaches of La Gomera. In urban areas or hidden under cliffs, easy to access or that can only be reached by boat, with volcanic sand or pebbles, La Gomera has a beach to suit every taste. Places to enjoy the crystal-clear water and connect with marine nature.

Contenido

All we need to top off this incredible natural experience is to add on the island’s volcanic nature and breathtaking geography, another defining characteristic of the island. La Gomera is made up of constant valleys, ravines and cliffs that graze the coast, resulting in unimaginably captivating scenery. The clearest and doubtless most famous example is Los Órganos, in Vallehermoso, the result of water erosion, the strength of the wind and eruptions that happened at least two million years ago.

Places to choose from

San Sebastián de La Gomera

Contenido

It’s the capital town and the epicentre of the island. The most popular festivities, protected areas of cultural significance and the port where Cristopher Columbus last stepped on land before setting sail for the Americas are all here. Popularly known as La Villa, this is the perfect place to just drift and see where it takes you.

Agulo

Contenido

To the north of the island, Agulo offers nature, tradition and the best historic quarter in the archipelago. That’s why it’s known as ‘El Bombón de La Gomera’ (the sweet of La Gomera). In the upper area, the Abrante Viewpoint offers fantastic views of Agulo’s historic quarter and even Tenerife.

Valle Gran Rey

Contenido

It is named in honour of the home of Hupalupa, the main character in the rebellion on La Gomera in 1488. A stroll through the island’s history and along charming beaches like Playa del Inglés or Playa de Vueltas.

Vallehermoso

Contenido

In the southern area, Vallehermoso is home to the Alto de Garajonay, the highest point on the island and almost 1300 hectares of National Park. La Laguna Grande, in the centre of the island, is the perfect place to unwind and recover your strength before climbing the Lomo del Carretón.

Alajeró

Contenido

Famous for the cliffs along its coast, the network of trails is the most efficient way to visit them all. There’s a reason Alajeró is known as ‘the southern trail’. In addition, the natural monument of La Caldera is the island’s largest volcanic formation.

Hermigua

Contenido

Home of the best climate in the world. That is how it was defined by international scientists at the start of the last century. Where should you enjoy it? La Caleta Beach, with its volcanic sand and all the services, is without a doubt the best option.
